How daunting and frustrating it’s when your car is refusing to take you to the place you’ve scheduled to be. 8 out of 10 car owners have experienced this menace. You put the key, turn it, and nothing happens…
…or all you can hear is a sound as if the car is mocking you.
There are many reasons why your car won’t start but don’t worry, we have a solution to your problem in a few not-hard to follow steps. The easiest is to call for help, but before you do…
Here are three simple things to check for yourself:
1. The Battery: The first thing to check about the battery are the connected cables to the terminals; Open the car bonnet>>check the two cables and ensure they are connected firmly to the battery terminals. Also, Corrosion on your battery can spell trouble. Check and clean your battery terminals to make sure there is a clean, complete connection, then try to start your car again.
Secondly, a discharged or dead battery is one of the reasons your car could not start. Maybe you either forget to shut off the dome light or something else, or it could be some defective electrical system part of the vehicle that drains the battery down.
Occasionally, if the battery is old, it could suddenly die one day, even though it was OK the day before.
In either case, if the battery charges low or if the battery is low in charge, the power to turn the engine may not be sufficient: you might hear some clicking noise, or the starter may turn very slow while trying to start the engine.
Here’s how to check if the battery is discharged:
Switch on the windshield wipers. If they are going very slowly, much slower than usual, or you observe the dome (interior) lights get very dim when you start the engine or when you turn on the wipers. Then the battery could likely be low on power.
Do this to get the battery recharged
- One way is to jump-start your car and let the engine run for a while to recharge the battery. Watch a simple short video below on how to jump-start.
Be careful not to mix the positive and negative cables while jump-starting your car; this may cause extensive damage to your car’s electrical system.
- Another way is to ask for a battery from a passerby or neighbour to start the car.
One last thing: If the battery is more than 4-5 years old, it might be completely dead so that it won’t take charge, and the car will not restart again after you shut it off. In this case, you may need a new battery. A problem with the vehicle’s charging system can also cause the battery not to recharge.
2. Fuel: It’s shocking that sometimes your car is just out of fuel, and you may possibly feel a bit silly if that is the cause why your car isn’t starting…
However, It Happens Frequently Than You Can Think!
When riding around all of the time, it’s possible to forget that your gas tank needs to be refilled.
The good news is…the fuel gauge was designed to help you confirm the level of your fuel…
>>From your dashboard, locate the gauge and be sure you have a level above the empty (red) sign. Else, get some fuel and try to start the car again.
3. The Spark Plugs: Another crucial thing to consider about your car’s performance after you have tried everything on this list is your vehicle’s spark plugs. Spark plugs are a crucial component to your vehicle actually starting: they’re actually what offers your car the necessary “spark” required to start the engine.
If Something is Wrong With Your Plugs The Car Obviously Will Not Start Properly.
It can be easy to overlook this aspect considering all the other possible solutions the car starting problem might have, however, it could be the crucial fix your car needs to start working again. Replacing spark plugs may also sound horrifying to the common person, but it is a normal part of owning and maintaining a car.
